In the comfort of an indoor pool, work one on one with a qualified rolling coach. These classes are fun for anyone that wants to work on their roll.

1 pm to 4 pm

Precision Boat Control & Design
Held on sheltered water in the Nestucca River, this class provides the student with a repertoire of useful strokes and boat maneuvers for different boat designs. The key cause and effect relationships involved in boat control are introduced and students learn to perform maneuvers safely and efficiently. This class is fun for anyone.

Fear to fun in the surf Level 1
The surf zone can be an intimidating place at times. See this exciting environment through new eyes as you gain confidence and understanding of the dynamics at work. Learn to select a safe play zone, read water, and operate in the surf. This class emphasizes how to safely negotiate a surf break zone during launching and landing without getting surfed. Become skilled at holding position and moving within the surf zone with boat control and safety as the number one priority. This class is a great choice for people looking to try the surf for a first time or have not yet had formal instruction in the surf.

Short boat surfing
Students should expect to learn proper techniques for safely operating in the surf zone with whitewater and surf specific kayaks. We will cover topics such as reading the surf, selecting a break, launching and landing on the beach, positioning in the group and on the wave, bracing and rolling, and surfing (forwards, side, and backwards, bottom turns, cutbacks, etc...) This class is fun for people who have a consistent roll in rough water.

Fun & Feedback

Having mastered the recognition of hazards, holding position, and self rescuing in the Fear 2 Fun class, move onto this next step before venturing out beyond the break.  You will work activities that create opportunities for Practicing teamwork, signaling, launching, landing, broaching, maneuvering and surfing in the soup zone with lots of feedback and tips to help you along.  If you had fun during Fear 2 Fun but want more time to practice this one’s for you.  Have fun, gain some confidence, and become comfortable in the surf!  Students should have completed Fear 2 Fun and be able to self rescue.  A roll is handy, but is NOT required.

Long Boat Surfing Skills
Once comfortable with basic surf zone operation it's time to surf! This class emphasizes how to select a break, position yourself to catch waves, and enjoy the ride. This class is an introduction to surfing waves in a sea kayak. We will be practicing the use of surf etiquette, spacing, and group management while playing in the surf. Learn to prevent and control broaching, side surfing, and even back surfing. This class is fun for students that already know how to brace and control their boats reasonably well and have either a roll or can self rescue by swimming their boat in through the surf after a capsize. Fear to Fun in the surf is a great class to take before joining Long Boat Surf Skills.

Rough Water Rescues
Rescues are rarely needed in flat water, so why practice them there?  This class will focus on the most effective rescue techniques used in real conditions.  Learn how to prioritize and execute efficient rescues with confidence in wind, current, and waves.  Students should be well practiced at basic assisted re-entries.  A solid roll is not required, but some rolling experience is helpful.

Rock Garden Safety and Rescues
Oregon has a very active geologic past. Giant lava flows streamed across our state from great fissures in and around what is now Idaho resulting in massive rock outcroppings all along the Pacific NW coast. Explore this stunning coastline’s labyrinth of arches, tunnels, and overfalls while learning to control and maneuver your sea kayak in this complex environment.   We will practice skills that increase our safety margin within the rocks.  Rock specific rescue techniques  and methods will be practiced in real conditions.  This class is fun for people who already have some ocean paddling experience and can confidently perform  regular deep water rescues quickly and effectively.

Cape Lookout Adventure
Explore this favorite paddling destination of local sea kayakers. Cape Lookout is a popular hiking and whale watching spot during certain times of the year. It offers good surf, some rock gardening, and amazing scenery. This tour is fun for experienced paddlers with reliable rescue and maneuvering skills.

Video Stroke Analysis
Look at your paddling skills through new eyes!  Gain perspective by practicing maneuvering skills for the camera then analyze the footage together as a class to learn from one another.  Peer review sessions are a great way to share ideas and discuss common issues.   Having trouble keeping up on trips?  Does your boat not seem to go where you want?  Perhaps you are already paddling in rough water, but have hit a plateau…Get back to basics, pick them apart and tune up those skills.  Strong fundamentals are essential before moving onto harder water.  This session is good for any skill level.

Coastal kayak Fishing I: Crabbing

Crabbing From a Kayak is designed for everyone of all skill levels and will be held in flat to mild water. We'll use handlines and Crab Hawks to fish for keeper dungeness. There's potential for a little salmon fishing as well. This class is great for anyone interested in catching crab just for fun or for sustenance on a mutli-day expedition in a coastal environment.

9:00 am to 12:30 pm

Eddies, currents and wavesThe Nestucca River drifts peacefully along the main event site just south of Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City, then empties into the ocean resulting in the confluence of swift current, eddies, and waves. Enjoy the scenic flats along the river and challenge yourself down at the mouth of the Nestucca. This class is a great choice for any skill level.

Combat Rolling and Bracing
The roll can be an elusive beast.  What works in the pool when you are expecting to flip does not always transfer to rougher waters.  Turn your quiet domesticated pool roll into the powerful and reliable combat roll you really need.   Students will be practicing bracing and rolling skills where they are needed most.  The swirling current, swell, and surf at the Nestucca River Mouth will provide a dynamic but safe environment to practice this rough water skill.  Students should already have a reliable roll in flat water and should be comfortable self rescuing in mild conditions.
